The problem with creating content with AI

There's a specific failure mode that emerges when teams scale their use of AI content tools. It doesn't show up immediately — it builds slowly, and by the time you notice it, it's everywhere.

The failure mode is this: the content is consistent, but it's consistently not your brand.

AI produces consistent output — that's the problem

AI language models are trained to produce fluent, grammatically correct, tonally appropriate content. When you ask for professional B2B marketing copy, you get professional B2B marketing copy. When you ask for it again, you get something similar.

That consistency is valuable in the abstract. In practice, what it produces is a kind of averaged, generic version of the content type — what marketing copy generally sounds like, not what your marketing copy sounds like.

The issue is that "professional B2B marketing copy" has a recognisable signature at scale. It uses the same structural patterns, the same hedging language, the same high-energy adjectives. It says things like "powerful" and "seamless" and "streamline your workflow." It sounds like everyone else who asked for the same thing.

The brand erosion is gradual and invisible

Teams that generate a lot of AI content don't suddenly produce off-brand work. The erosion is incremental. One post sounds a bit generic. Then two. Then the tone across the whole channel starts to drift — slightly more excitable than your brand voice, slightly less precise, using vocabulary you don't actually use.

Nobody made a decision to drift. The drift happens because the tool doesn't know what your brand sounds like, and the people using it don't have a reliable way to communicate that.

Brand consistency isn't just visual. It's tonal, lexical, structural. AI tools ignore most of it by default.

Why editing doesn't fix it

The usual response to this problem is "we edit the output." And editing does help — it catches the worst cases. But editing AI output at scale puts the brand governance burden on individual editors, each of whom has a slightly different sense of what "on-brand" means.

Editing is also reactive. You're fixing output that was wrong, rather than generating output that starts closer to right. At scale, that's expensive in time and produces variable results.

The structural problem

AI content tools are not the problem. The problem is the absence of a mechanism to give them your actual brand context — not a description of it, but the structured data that defines it.

Voice and tone documents, approved vocabulary lists, positioning statements, banned words — these exist in most companies. They're in a Notion doc, or a brand guidelines PDF, or a slide deck. They're written for humans. AI tools can't read them in any usable way.

Until brand context is structured and machine-readable — until AI tools can actually access it as data, not as a paragraph of prose in a prompt — the consistency problem doesn't go away. It scales with the content volume.

That's the failure mode. The fix is an infrastructure problem, not an editing problem.
